Prepare your jokes about Grand Theft Auto in real life because BMW debuted its new color-changing paint technology. Okay, jokes aside. The Verge wrote that the German automaker revealed the car concept with color-changing paint at the CES 2022 and this technology is connected with a Kindle more than you’d think.

So what connection shares a new BMW with e-books? The technology of e-books is based on E ink, which is the electronic paper technology. E Ink technology opens completely new ways of changing the vehicle’s appearance in line with the driver’s aesthetic preferences, the environmental conditions or even functional requirements.

The surface coating of the BMW iX Flow featuring E Ink contains many millions of microcapsules, with a diameter equivalent to the thickness of a human hair. Each of these microcapsules contains negatively charged white pigments and positively charged black pigments. Depending on the chosen setting, stimulation by means of an electrical field causes either the white or the black pigments to collect at the surface of the microcapsule, giving the car body the desired shade.

Just don’t expect to see this at your local BMW dealership anytime soon: the automaker says this is just an “advanced research and design project.”

Despite the fact that technology is indeed innovative the color scheme has a limited amount of options: white, black and grey. But it’s more than enough to influence the car’s performance depending on different factors. When the company designed this technology engineers took into account different abilities of light and dark colours.

A white surface reflects a lot more sunlight than a black one. By implication, heating of the vehicle and passenger compartment as a result of strong sunlight and high outside temperatures can be reduced by changing the exterior to a light colour. In cooler weather, a dark outer skin will help the vehicle to absorb noticeably more warmth from the sun.

This is also such an innovative technology because all car makers try to implement the ability to personalize the interior of the vehicle while BMW gives an option to personalise the exterior. Although there is a question of how durable this “paint” is, but the concept is still the concept and in the future this technology will be improved.
