Sometimes, when the fight begins it can cause harm not only to characters who are involved but also to those who are passing by. The second week of the Apple vs Epic battle has almost finished. Epic thought they’d dominate all the time with a rebellious sparkle in their eyes, but the company hadn’t even thought that Apple could take aim at the vulnerable spot – the Unreal Engine platform.

The Verge explained in their article why the digital world is impossible without the UE platform and we’re here to tell you. Apple’s move to delete Fortnite was only the bottom line of the punishment. The company targeted Epic’s developer account tied to its game engine and, as such, we can construct such a move as a totalitarian influence. Cutting down the access to iOS and macOS could mean a disaster to the digital world. Thanks to Epic’s cat reaction they have secured their Unreal Engine platform, though the destiny of the entire ecosystem is endangered.

According to the Epic’s warning: Apple has raised a hand not only against the Epic, but also against “hundreds of video games, the human brain, Baby Yoda, and space flight”.  Epic doesn’t owe The Mandalorian but they have mutual trust because the second one uses UE tools to do design stuff. It’s not an accident that it’s better to use Apple gadgets because of good performance.

I remember playing Unreal shooter when I was seven and now I know that the Unreal Engine was the foundation for not only that game. Epic has expanded its network and platform’s accessibility so dozens of game makers, Hollywood production and special effects studios, and other firms in the 3D rendering and computer graphics businesses can use it.

I have a feeling that the UE has been the leading platform for developers’ entire life. Epic has constructed its own games, including Fortnite, Gears of War, and Unreal Tournament. Also, other world-famous companies such as Riot Games by Valorant, Gearbox Software from Borderlands 3, and Square Enix – the Final Fantasy VII Remake – use the UE platform. Plus, Epic has opened to public usage its game developing platform so thousands of developers can use it in exchange for a five percent royalty fee.

Now, Apple knows that the engine is a vulnerable spot of Epic’s and will aim at it in the next punishment move. The US court has created a temporary bubble for Unreal Engine because the injunction hearing to settle the matter is scheduled for September 28. If the court loses the tightly knotted thread, Epic’s gaming platform will suffer from the same fate as Fortnite, so the system will no longer get updates for testing tools and broader development.

The Verge tends to think that if Apple successfully wins the injunction next month it’ll punish Epic, not with a fast, immediate death (how dramatic), but sentence it to suffer slowly. Apple has control over the process of app creation: from zero to the iOS submission, and any future updates, the company reviews too. When developers are working with Unreal’s tools, they make apps, games, or any other media material both for Microsoft and iOS. The restriction to use Apple’s updated tools and features means that game developers won’t be able to fix new bugs because they’ve got no appropriate instruments.

“Developing a game using different game engines for different platforms may be prohibitively expensive and difficult. In any event, it’s not as cost-effective as using a game engine that supports different platforms,” explained Kevin Gammill, Microsoft’s general manager for gaming developer experiences, in a declaration of support for Epic that Microsoft filed.

The Unreal Engine has got the primal task that it should cope with and it’s game development for PC and consoles. However, since all phones have become a portable console, with the additional function to make calls, the gaming business has shown its wings and begun developing cross-platform play. Epic actively uses a developer toolkit that works along with Unreal Engine, called Epic Online Services, that allows games to take advantage of the technology developed initially for Fortnite. Cross-platform is the attractive part that encourages developers to use Unreal Engine to build virtual worlds. If Epic loses the Apple developer account, the lion share of iOS developers will quit using Unreal Engine.
