Sony is really into car making. You know well that this company produces one of the most popular consoles PlayStation, it develops and distributes lenses, cameras, and other devices. However, Sony sensed that bigger opportunities are living in a car-making sphere.  At CES 2020, Sony Group Corporation (“Sony”) announced “VISION-S,” an initiative aimed at contributing to the evolution of mobility, and exhibited a prototype vehicle at its booth. This year at CES 2022 the company announced and exhibited an SUV-type prototype vehicle (VISION-S 02) as a new form factor.

While Apple feeds the community with a desire to enter the car-producing market, Sony has already done it. In December 2020 Sony started public road testing in Europe as well as verification tests of the safety. The company entered the next stage in 2021 when it began 5G driving tests. This year Sony aims to establish an operating company “Sony Mobility Inc.” And this will be a key to entry into the EV market.

Sony posted several demo videos on YouTube featuring both Vision-S prototype EVs. Some, like the two-minute Concept Movie above, give hints of the picture-perfect lifestyle these cars could be a part of. Others show off the design of the user interface or feature a test of remote driving via a 5G connection linking Tokyo and Germany in real-time.

Sensors and cutting-edge technologies are core objects Sony is making emphasis on. In its press release, Sony mentioned that the new company will squeeze everything best from AI and robotic technologies “to help realize a world where everyone can live in harmony with robots on a daily basis,”.
