Basically, Google hasn’t only released a new budget smartphone with a super affordable price tag of $349 / £349 / AU$599, the smartphone is also an ultimatum. The company doesn’t offer you a choice; there is no such notion. You have a price, you pick up the phone, and you get a handset without color or size choice. There is only a Black Google Pixel 4a.

It could feel very strict, but Google also provides you with only one variant of memory to select and it’s 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It’s much better than its predecessor, the Google Pixel 3a.

There is a reason to note why Google has joined the middle price tag club this year, where the competitive atmosphere becomes heavier with every release. Pixel 4a needs to overcome an impressive OnePlus Nord, Moto G 5G Plus, Realme X50 5G, and Mi Note 10 Lite. These are stark competitors with better physical characteristics.

The US will see the Google Pixel 4a launch on August 20, while on other continents the situation is quite complicated. Australia will see the new Google’s model on September 10, and the UK will catch up with the rest of the world on October 1.

The Google Pixel 4a brings back to life a sense of ease because it’s, comparatively, the most compact handset. A 5.81-inch OLED display makes the phone easy to keep in the palm of your hand and it weighs only 143g so you won’t feel like your pocket is full of rocks. Also, that means the Google Pixel 4a is lighter than the Pixel 3a and the new iPhone SE.

The Pixel’s 4a body is made of polycarbonate unibody which has both advantages and disadvantages. The phone is lighter indeed, but when you touch it you can tell it doesn’t feel particularly premium. But, with this material comes an extra sense of calm, because you won’t hiccup every time the phone falls down; there’s no glass, except the display, to smash.

Thankfully, Google didn’t change the habitual position of the power/lock key, so it’s situated under the thumb on the right of the body. The black volume button also finds its place right below. The SIM tray is situated on the opposite side, where you can put only one SIM card because Pixel 4a has got eSIM card support.

The new model has got a USB-C charger at the bottom right between the microphone and speaker grilles. And now… hold your breath… The Pixel 4a will have a 3.5mm headphone jack! You’ll find it on the top of the handset. On the back of the body, there’s a comfortably situated fingerprint scanner. Moreover, it’s really fast.

The OLED screen comes with Full HD+, 1080×2340 resolution. The picture on the screen is bright and colorful, though when you use it under the sun it reflects it and makes it difficult to use.

According to TechRadar, the Google Pixel 4a has got an impressive feature: an always-on display. It’s a permanent condition when your phone shows you the time, date, battery level, weather, and other information.

The battery storage is quite poor when you look at comparative models. The Pixel 4a has got a 3,140mAh battery which is larger than the 1,812mAh battery in the new iPhone SE but less impressive than Nord’s 4,115mAh battery.

The Google Pixel 4a doesn’t have a quadra-, triple, or penta-camera set. There are only two cameras: back and front.

The 12.2MP sensor will meet you with an f/1.7 aperture and an 84-degree field of view. It can shoot 4K quality video, though the image won’t be so smooth, so my recommendation is to lower the bar and shoot 1080p video at 120fps max, or 720p video at super-slow 240fps.

The lack of cameras makes the Pixel 4a a perfect phone for my mom and any mom who always misclicking the right camera mode.

There’s also just a single camera on the front of the Google Pixel 4a – it’s an 8MP, f/2.0 snapper with an 84-degree field of view, and it can shoot 1080p video at 30fps.

Google Pixel 4a is not a cutting-edge smartphone, but it has got everything for the price. The phone has got a Snapdragon 730 chipset, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage under the plastic cover. These parameters aren’t enough to run heavy games like PUBG or Mobile Legends on maximum. Well, the phone will provide you with the perfect graphics but it’ll sacrifice loading time.

Wrapping up

Google has found the thing to manipulate, and it’s the price tag and reputation. People all over the world are in love with the Pixel 4 flagship line because of performance, stability, and functionality. Pixel 4a has also got good performance, stability, and functionality, but not enough to compete with middle market smartphones. However, its price is a cheat code and a manipulative instrument, because you will get much more for a $349 handset.
