Five years ago Volkswagen teased to bring back to life its iconic “hippie bus”. During the auto show in Detroit five years ago, the company revealed the ID Buzz concept. Finally, according to The Verge Volkswagen is ready to show off a production version. VW CEO Herbert Diess teased the demonstration of the physical vehicle on March 9th. Moreover, VW promises that they are planning to sell a production version of the award-winning I.D. Buzz in 2022 for the United States, Europe and China.

This model was designed to appeal to people’s sense of nostalgia. The ID Buzz concept is the modern reincarnation of the Microbus and the logical development of it. When the concept won several awards during the Detroit auto show, it meant that the release of the car was just a matter of time.

The vehicle is a clear homage to the iconic vehicle that the company sold in North America between 1950 and 1980. The production version of the concept is expected to deviate little from the blunt-faced original because all of the batteries will be mounted under the floor. Think of a longer, more van-like Chevrolet Bolt, and you can get an idea of what the electric VW might be like to drive.

VW writes that they took a lot from the Microbus. For example, the ability to change the direction of seats in order to put more luggage is present. But time gives opportunities and engineering solutions. You can now manipulate seats as shown in the example below.

VW ID Buzz

We’ve already been treated to images of the ID Buzz draped in high-tech sensors and hardware in its role as an autonomous test vehicle in Germany. VW has said the autonomous Microbus will serve as a platform for its full-scale commercial ride-hailing and delivery operation that it plans on launching in Germany in 2025.

And again we have to wait for more details about technical specs and we hope that Volkswagen will reveal them on March.
