It’s fair to say, our home screens haven’t changed all that much since the first iPhone hit the stores. Sure, there is logic to having your icons neatly arranged in rows and columns. Yet, some of us have been begging for a little customization. Now, finally, there are a few widgets we can use alongside the latest iOS14 update, and surprise, surprise it’s trending.

Now you can customize the names, size, and even change the color of any app icon. Having more control over your layouts allows you to experiment creatively giving your phone a personal touch. It can also be invaluable for navigation. Especially if your eyesight isn’t great or you find yourself scrolling endlessly trying to find a specific app.

So, we have gathered the instructions from a recent article by Katie Conner over at cnet, for two top ways to get more control over your home screen.

How to personalize your iPhone apps

Follow these step by step instructions to customize your apps thanks to the new iOS 14 update.

  1. Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone (it’s already preinstalled).
  2. Tap the plus icon in the top right corner.
  3. Select Add Action.
  4. In the search bar, type Open app and select the Open App app.
  5. Tap Choose and select the app you want to customize. This can be, for instance, Facebook, Spotify, or the Messages app.
  6. Now you can easily name the shortcut by tapping the 3 dots in the top right-hand corner. Then select Add to Home Screen.
  7. Where it says Home Screen Name and Icon, create any name for the shortcut.
  8. You can replace icon images via the Safari app. Simply search for the one you like the look of and save it as a photo.
  9. Now return to the Shortcuts app, selecting the current icon. You should now be able to switch it to your newly saved photo by tapping Choose Photo. You can use the zoom feature to select all or parts of the image and tap Choose when you are happy.
  10. Tap Add

Now your icons should be exactly the way you want them. The apps in their original form will still exist so you will need to store them out of sight and mind in a folder.

Home screen customization for your iPhone

Now for the how-to on changing up your home screen. This method requires the help of a handy new widget but is super simple and gives your phone a new look.

  1. Download the Widgetsmith app on your iPhone.
  2. First off the app lets you customize the icon size, choosing from small, medium or large.
  3. Tap the widget to customize it. Things that you can change are the font and colors. Once you’re finished with this, tap Save.
  4. Head to your home screen and hold and press down on an app. Tap Edit Home Screen
  5. You should see a plus icon in the upper left-hand corner to tap. Next, search for Widgetsmith and select the icon.
  6. Pick the size of the widget you’re willing to add to your home screen and tap Add Widget.
  7. Selecting Edit Widget will allow you to change the widget itself, just press and hold the one you want to customize.

Please consider that at this time, you can only customize the following apps: Weather (if you have a premium subscription), Calendar, World Time, Reminders, Health, Astronomy, Tides (with a premium subscription) and Photos.
