Netflix wasted no time in dropping the first trailer for The Witcher season 2. They’ve not long announced the show’s return and already we have had a fair few glimpses of what is to come with its return on December 17th.

Though to be fair, the inaugural WitcherCon event was the perfect place for an unveiling. We have had a few teasers but the full-length reveal had a lot more to giveaway about the upcoming season. And we have plenty to look forward to.

Caution; mild spoilers for The Witcher, season 1 throughout!

If you haven’t sunken your teeth into the first series then a binge is definitely in order! Season 2 will pick up where the first left off. Geralt of Rivia played by actor Henry Cavill and ‘his destiny’ the exiled Princess Cirilla (Freya Allan) have at last united despite many attempts to prevent it from coming to pass.

Now the duo must leave behind the danger in Cintra venture to the mountain fortress Kaer Morhen, where Geralt was trained as part of the School of the Wolf. There, Ciri will have to face her darkest fears as she is subjected to rigorous trials and priming necessary to control her power and become a witcher as well. Judging by the previous teasers this will be no easy task and more of an ordeal.

In addition to the Princesses’ tribulations, we were also treated to plenty of action footage of our leading itinerant monster-hunter battling it out head to head in the snow and brandishing swords at his foes.

As well as the trailer we also had a few other surprise snippets from Netflix to whet our appetites for the coming season. They gave us a behind-the-scenes miniature feature which gives us a short interview with Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan discussing Yennefer and Ciri’s future character arcs. We also got a sneak preview of Jaskier the bards’ jaunty-looking season 2 wardrobe.  The episode titles for the upcoming season have also been leaked, and their cryptic nature has everyone speculating. Needless to say, Netflix has created quite a buzz!

The release date for the upcoming animated prequel Nightmare of the Wolf was also announced at WitcherCon. Netflix revealed the date as August 23rd, and we also had an official announcement of a next-generation PS5 and Xbox Series X update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt from CD Projekt Red, which will arrive for free later this year and bring DLC inspired by the Netflix show.

We also have a new song from Jaskier to look forward to as promised by actor Cavill in an exclusive. “Toss a Coin To Your Witcher,” from season 1 made the rounds and achieved meme immortality. We, like Chaim Gartenberg over at The Verge, are eager to find out whether the new tune is as big a hit or not.
