2020 has been a challenging year with Covid restrictions in place. Once upon a time, we would have flocked to the Apple store for a personal demo. But being able to touch products is difficult, to say the least right now.

In light of this, the entire iPhone 12 series has been launched via informative video streaming events. Granted it was a logical adaptation and we have enjoyed the updates but only a select few have had any hands-on time with the phones pre-purchasing.

Dan Ackerman was afforded a few minutes with the smallest and largest new releases, his short but informative article over a cnet makes a good read. We have dug up what we can to give you an overview before you buy and help you preorder from the iPhone 12 series.

While the glaringly obvious difference is in their physicality the features between the higher and lower-end models will play a large part in which you choose. We can’t divulge too much on the features front until the models have been on the market a little longer. But, seeing the two together and reading Dan’s initial impressions we can see how the design details differ and give a guide on the weight and feel of the phones.

Small but mighty, the iPhone 12 Mini

Despite not sharing all of the bells and whistles the Pro Max model can brag about the iPhone Mini’s compact dimension give it a unique selling point.

Way back when mobile phone culture was kickstarted the dimensions of the designs began to shrink. Having a smaller phone was a genuine status symbol. A smaller phone was more expensive and it was a wonder as to how they could manufacture something to run so efficiently from a chip that size.

The dawn of touch screens inevitably brought about the need for more screen space and by proxy a larger phone size altogether. The iPhone 12 Mini is somewhat of a homage to the compact phones full of features of days gone by.

For those with smaller hands, a standard smartphone can be cumbersome and being a pricy investment, you don’t want to be in danger of dropping it as you are maneuvering. So, believe it or not, there is a growing demand for compact premium options.

Many of the latest premium smartphones sport a larger screen so the Mini’s 5.4-inch screen potentially gives it an edge over the competition. It still comes equipped with the same features found on a regular iPhone 12. So If you are after something less tablet-like you are in luck.

Dan actually remarked that it felt very small and is a sign of how accustomed to larger phones we have become over the years. He also liked the lighter (4.8-ounces) weight felt in his hands.

Notable premium iPhone 12 Pro Max design differences

It is the smaller design perks that people are going to fall for between the Pro and the non-Pro models. With a stainless steel border instead of the regular aluminum band, it has a subtler style about it. The cheaper models are shinier than the duller Pro Max but it compliments the back of the phone beautifully.

The 12 Mini and 12 are decked out with a clear glass back but the Pro and Pro Max have a frosty-looking matte-glass finish.

While the iPhone Mini’s smaller size is commendable the iPhone Pro Max isn’t outlandish when you compare it with standard smartphones. At 6.7-inches it may be the worlds apart set side by side with the Mini but within the series 12 line-up it is a logical size-up from the iPhone 12 Pro.

You can preorder as of Friday, Nov. 6 ready for arrival starting from Nov. 13. Below is a comparative spec chart of the entire iPhone 12 series with pricing and features detailed.
